Privacy, privacy, privacy! Your home is your hap Privacy, privacy, privacy!
Your home is your happy place. We understand that here at Sustainable Land Solutions. Our privacy screens are planted with Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’ (Schip Laurel). These are the only non-native, besides crop plants, that we plant. Schip’s are not invasive, and do not threaten to spread beyond their reach. We plant these spatially to start ticking in 2 years, and provide a growing screen after 3 years. These wonderful plants spread 5-7’ and grow 10-12’ tall. With their April to May blooms, they are covered in sweet little 🐝 which will have your yard buzzing! They’re an excellent evergreen screen for our area due to the deer resistance. Deer have little to no interest in Schip’s, making them a great privacy screen installation for your home.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again y We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again your privacy is key!
Our Native Focused Privacy Screen is an excellent way to achieve your backward sanctuary💚
From left to right, this privacy screen includes:
Tilia americana (American Linden) aka Basswood or a bee-tree. This species is favored most by bees. Pollen collected by bees produces strongly flavored honey from the nectar of this Linden. Tilia americana is the only native Linden tree in North America.
The large evergreen shrubs planted are the only non-native plants that we plant, besides crop plants. They are Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’ (Schip Laurel). We plant these because they are highly deer resistant in our area. Deer populations in PA are higher today than they have ever been, since the first arrival of early settlers. These grow as an evergreen hedge 10-15’ tall and 5-7’ wide. They bloom in fragrant white flowers from April-May.
Next in the line are Hydrangea quercifolia (Oakleaf Hydrangea). Large, showy cone blooms are first white, then fade to red-gray. These blooms benefit small native bees, hoverflies, and songbirds. The Oakleaf’s are planted around the Serviceberry, Pawpaw, and Chokecherry. More info about these below.
Amelanchier grandiflora (Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry) is next in our screen. This species provides a source of nectar and pollen in April for early-emerging pollinators. The fruit can also be enjoyed by birds and humans around June. Serviceberry hosts a wide variety of caterpillars, bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Asimina triloba (American Pawpaw) produces the largest native fruit in our area. This fruit has been used for hundreds of years by the Indigenous populations. While still ecologically stable in PA, the Pawpaw is considered a threatened species in neighboring New York, and endangered in New Jersey. The fruit is highly desired as they are a nutritional powerhouse.
Last in this privacy screen is the Prunus virginiana (Chokecherry). Native Prunus (Cherry) are hosts to 454 native species. They are of the second highest ecological importance. They provide fruit, habitat, and watershed protection for birds and insects.

We’ve converted 350 sq ft+ of mowed turf grass i We’ve converted 350 sq ft+ of mowed turf grass into native space!
This beautiful project consisted of not only converting 350 sq ft+ of mowed turf grass to native space in the front yard, but adding to existing gardens in the backyard as well.
The plants were chosen primarily with their ecological value in mind. In the front yard, we’ve planted 3 Ilex Glabra (Inkberry), 2 Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry), 1 Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush), and 1 Amelanchier canadensis (Serviceberry). Inkberries make great privacy plants and are a host plant for the Henry’s elfin butterfly. Black Chokeberries pollen supports the native mason bee, Coral Hairstreak butterfly, and Large Lace-border Moth. Buttonbush hosts some of the largest and showiest moths. These include the Royal Walnut Moth, Titan Sphinx, Hydrangea Sphinx, as well as the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. Serviceberry serves as a host to songbirds as well as attractive butterflies such as the Viceroy. They make a wonderful replacement for Burning Bush. Burning Bush is a non-native and invasive species and a Class B noxious weed in Pennsylvania. Class B noxious weeds are highly encouraged to be removed from landscapes to help control them from spreading and choking out native plant vegetation.
The backyard border garden bed has added 4 Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Spicebush). This is in addition to a spicebush already present. The Carolina Spicebush is a great shrub for nesting birds and hosts the Spicebush Swallowtail. Having more than one is important, as there are male and female Spicebushes and both are needed for pollination.
These plantings in both the front and backyard are foundation plantings. The next step in restoring these areas to native space, is to plant perennials, ground covers, and grasses. This adds food and shelter to the wonderful native insects and birds listed above.
We use a thick layer of double ground hardwood mulch to convert mowed lawn areas into native spaces. These gardens are created with the 3-5 year goal of self-sustainability with minimal maintenance required.
We’d love to restore native space to your home too.

Replacing non-native/invasive species with natives Replacing non-native/invasive species with natives is an excellent way to improve the local ecology around your home!
These are just two examples of replacements that we’ve recently installed.
In our cover photo, you’ll see a line of Ilex Glabra (Inkberry). These make a wonderful hedge, as well as a great replacement for Japanese Barberry, English Boxwood, and Japanese Boxwood. The native Inkberry are evergreen hosts to the Henry’s elfin butterfly.
Our second example of a native replacement is a Common Lillac, native to southeastern Europe. We’ve replaced this with a Prunus serotina (Black Cherry). Native Prunus (Cherry) species host 450+ species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). They are of the second highest ecological value for host species here in Pennsylvania. A few of the Lepidoptera species which the Black Cherry hosts are: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Cherry Gall Azure, and Banded Tussock Moth.
If you’re interested in replacing some non-native/invasive species or looking to add more to your home, please visit our website SLSeco.com or call us at 484-202-0804 to book a consultation today!
Another 500sq ft+ of turf grass converted into nat Another 500sq ft+ of turf grass converted into native space!
This was beautiful project of connecting two existing gardens in the front yard, and creating a native privacy screen in the backyard!
The plants were chosen with privacy and ecological value in mind. In the front yard, we’ve planted 3 Myrica pennsylvanica (Bayberry) and 1 Prunus serotina (Black Cherry). The Black Cherry is a host plant to over 450 species of butterflies and moths including Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Promethea Moth, and the Wild Cherry Sphinx Moth. The species Prunus, Cherry, holds the second highest ecological value native to our region. This has been planted as a succession plant to the number one plant in ecological value, oaks. Bayberries are semi evergreen shrubs that have a sweet scent to them. The white berries are favorites of Chickadees, Catbirds, Bluebirds, and many more!
The native privacy screen has been planted with 1 Magnolia virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia), 3 Ilex Glabra (Inkberry), 2 Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Spicebush), 1 Cornus racemosa (Grey Dogwood), and 3 Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry). The Sweetbay Magnolia is a host plant to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Palamedes Swallowtail, and Sweetbay Silkmoth amongst many other species. Inkberries make great privacy plants and are a host plant for the Henry’s elfin butterfly. The Carolina Spicebush is a great shrub for nesting birds and hosts the Spicebush Swallowtail. Grey Dogwoods provides great value to waterfowl, marshbirds, and shorebirds. As well as host the Spring Azure butterfly. Black Chokeberries pollen supports the native mason bee, Coral Hairstreak butterfly, and Large Lace-border Moth.
Both the front and backyard will have Rhododendron maximum added to them as well. 2 in front to replace a 30+ year old Rhody that died and 1 to round out the privacy line. Rhododendron’s have a special value to our native bumblebees.
As you can see from the final pictures of the native privacy screen, the garden bed has been freshly mulched using double ground material hardwood mulch, then topped with a layer of leaves! This is one of our sustainable practices that we implement called, Biomimicry.

Thatch build up? Or new layer of mulch? Due to th Thatch build up? Or new layer of mulch?
Due to the nature of Zoysia grass to travel above and below ground, it can get pretty thick and loaded up with a heavy layer of that over time. Since Zoysia grass is a warm season grass type, it's actively growing right now. Which is the perfect time to perform a dethatching service! As a part of our Sustainable practices, we've kept the thatch on site and it is now another layer of mulch around the tree rings! Thus, adding more biodiversity to the soil to increase the soil health! If you've got a Zoysia grass or Bermuda grass lawn, reach out today for more info on our Dethatching service!
